Red Alert: Snow to begin Sunday morning, impacting travel by Sunday afternoon

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A large-scale winter storm is closing in on Western New York. This storm will have a major impact on our area and, as a result, News10NBC now has a red alert in effect for Sunday, Sunday night, and Monday.

Snow will begin near 9 to 10 a.m. Sunday with travel becoming very difficult by afternoon.  The rate of snowfall accumulation will increase to an inch and half per hour later Sunday.  By the end of Sunday evening snowfall totals will be in the range of 5 to 9 inches.  The area wide snowfall will continue Sunday night with another 4 to 8 inches possible.  The area wide snow will change to localized lake effect snow and become more intermittent on Monday. But at least an additional 1 to 2 inches is possible to start the week. This brings total snowfall in the range of 10 to 18 inches.  The higher totals will be due to an enhancement of moisture off Lake Ontario.

It is recommended that even if the snow has not ended, you should shovel in stages.  This should be a fluffy snow, but shoveling at several points in the storm will make it somewhat easier and less taxing.  There will be updates as more weather data comes in and it is also recommended you check back with News10NBC First Alert weather to monitor changes in the forecast.
