Gates woman accused of $140K theft from elderly couple to appear in court

GATES, N.Y. — A Gates woman is set to appear in court Wednesday after being accused of swindling more than $140,000 from an elderly couple.

Cheryl Verde, 66, was arrested in January and charged with grand larceny. According to the victim’s statement, Verde was providing in-home care to the couple and had Power of Attorney.

Between 2022 and 2025, police say she stole cash and jewelry. Verde is scheduled for a court hearing Wednesday afternoon.

In 2024, home health aide Alpha Harris was sentenced to six months in prison and ordered to pay more than $62,000 after authorities say Harris overbilled a 91-year-old and used her name and information to get a $300,00 mortgage for a home in Greece.
