ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Dr. Joshua Mack, a teacher at World of Inquiry School No. 58 in Rochester, has created an app called MindLiftROC to help students manage their mental health and prepare for their futures. News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke with Dr. Mack about the app’s impact.
MindLiftROC offers 24/7 access to personalized tools for students across the country. “The best approach is to personalize it. Right. Make it personal so it’s not intrusive,” Mack said. “Students can feel comfortable about engaging and have 24-hour access seven days a week to the supports that they need.”
The app includes daily mood check-ins, connections to therapists, and a chat system for students to discuss their feelings. “They have seven-day mood trends. and actually, journal prompts and everything,” Mack said. “They can create journal prompts for them based on their different, you know, moods and have them to respond.”
If a student indicates a crisis, counselors are notified and will reach out.
The app also aids students in finding and applying to colleges and securing financial aid, easing the burden on students and counselors. “You got, you know, 100 kids, trying to go to college,” Mack said. “Try to go here, try to get all of the information, want to learn about fast, but want to do that because can’t get to them all in a timely fashion.”
For students not interested in traditional college paths, the app provides resources for career technical education and trade schools. “I have a student who wants to go into the, into, career technical education,” Mack said. “We have a whole hub on trade schools here.”
Mack emphasized the unique nature of MindLiftROC. “There’s nothing like this that has been put together where they have all of these pieces together,” he said. “It’s never, student focused and personalized the way this is.”
Currently, MindLiftROC is available online, and Mack is working on launching it in the app store.
