WEBSTER, N.Y. — Wednesday marks 13 years since a tragic ambush took place in West Webster, where a gunman attacked firefighters responding to a house fire on Lake Road on Christmas eve.
Firefighters Mike Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka were killed when the gunman opened fire on first responders. Two other firefighters, Joseph Hofstetter and Ted Scardino, were injured in the attack.
The shooter, who had killed his sister and started the fire to lure in first responders, later turned the gun on himself at the scene. The fire damaged seven houses, with five of them burning to the ground.
West Webster firefighters will hold a ceremony at the scene on Lake Road Wednesday morning at 5 a.m. to honor the fallen firefighters.
