ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester City School District held a public hearing Tuesday on the potential closure of Northwest Middle School. Former Interim Superintendent Demario Strickland previously cited “persistently low enrollment” as a reason for the closure.
Few people attended the hearing, News10NBC observed.
District spokesperson Marisol Ramos-Lopez said, “We have two schools that are sharing that facility. Those students that are in seventh grade will continue in that building, then will just transition from being Northwest Middle School students to being Andrew Langston Middle School students.”
The district has not set a date for the decision on the school’s closure. Officials are seeking more input from parents before making a final decision.
In 2024, the district voted to close six schools: Schools No. 2 and 10, Franklin middle and high schools, Wilson Foundation Academy, and Northeast College Prep. Additionally, five more schools and their buildings were closed, including Schools No. 20, 29, 39, 44, and 106. The primary reason for these closures was low enrollment.
