ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Newly released data is shining a light on the scale of immigration crackdowns across the country under the President Donald Trump administration, including in the Rochester area.
ICE has arrested nearly 75,000 people with no criminal records from Jan. 20 to Oct. 15, according to the University of California, Berkeley’s Deportation Data Project. That’s more than a third of the roughly 220,000 people arrested by ICE agents. The figures don’t include arrests made by Border Patrol, which has also launched large immigration operations in cities.
News10NBC looked into the local data. In Monroe County, 46 people arrested by ICE had alleged immigration violations, but no criminal records. You can download the data here.
News10NBC has covered several immigration investigations this year. That includes last September, when people gathered at a home in the Park Avenue neighborhood in support of roofers targeted by an ICE investigation. A man from Ecuador was arrested and, during the protest, someone slashed the tires of a government vehicle.
There was also a traffic stop on Lyell Avenue and Whitney Street in March, where video shows Rochester Police officers helping Border Patrol agents. RPD Chief David Smith said the officers in the video violated city policy by helping the agents to get people outside of the van and handcuff them. A month later, U.S. Border Czar Tom Homan visited Rochester to criticize the sanctuary city policy that limits the ways that RPD can cooperate with federal immigration agents.
Here are some other highlights of the newly released data:
- About 90% of the people ICE arrested through mid-October were male.
- Mexican nationals accounted for the largest share of the overall arrests, with about 85,000, followed by nationals of Guatemala at 31,000 and Honduras at 24,000.
- More than 60% of those who were arrested were between the ages of 25 and 45.
- It’s not clear from the data how many of those who were arrested were deported, but 22,959 are listed under the category of “voluntary departure,” meaning they left the U.S. of their own accord.
