ROCHESTER, N.Y. — About 1,500 lake sturgeon fingerlings were released into the Genesee River at the Port of Rochester on Wednesday.
The fish were stocked as part of an ongoing effort to restore sturgeon populations in New York waters. Officials said partners including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service helped raise the fingerlings before their release.

Since 2003, about 9,000 lake sturgeon have been stocked in the Genesee River. The effort is part of a long-term commitment to support the species. Previously, overfishing and habitat loss caused declines in lake sturgeon populations.
