MARCY, N.Y. — Twelve people were hurt at Marcy Correctional Facility after inmates intentionally set three fires Sunday afternoon, according to the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA).
Eight guards and three National Guardsmen are being treated for smoke inhalation. A sergeant also suffered hip and back injuries and was treated at a local hospital. NYSCOPBA says the fires were set in the same cell block. In one case, prison staff found a flaming mattress.
Marcy Correctional is the same prison where Greece man Robert Brooks died after being beaten by guards in 2024. Ten guards were indicted in Brooks’ death.
Many of them are serving prison sentences right now. Two were acquitted of all charges.
