The bike crashed into a bridge abutment, ricocheting into a guardrail and going airborne. The riders were thrown as the bike crashed down onto the road surface, exploding into flames. Mark Rabideau suffered serious injuries and Lucille passed away from massive trauma Monday morning. Compounding the tragedy is the fact that the motorcycle fundraiser event was founded in memory of Mark's brother who died in a motorcycle crash seven years earlier. LAST IN THE NATION: NEW YORK TO ENACT NO-FAULT DIVORCE
Just before adjourning for the Fourth of July holiday, New York's legislature adopted - decades after other states - a form of no-faul divorce. With 6 out of every 10 marriages ending in divorce, until this past week New York still required draconian for-cause reasons to grant divorce: adultery or cruelty (almost impossible to prove in a practical sense), abandonment or imprisonment of the spouse for more than three years. Sheldon Silver said Governor Paterson would sign the measure into law.
TAX-HAPPY ALBANY WHACKS SMOKERS WITH WHOPPING INCREASE
Desperately clueless State lawmakers, indulging in the legislative equivalent of rummaging under car seats and sofa cushions for change, have lowered a draconian boom on New York smokers - a $1.60 per pack increase in taxes on cigarettes, with the taxman now exacting $5 from each packet of smokes sold in New York. Smokers took turns venting hoarse outrage in front of news cameras. Observers say of course the enormous hike will spark more bootlegging and black-market tobacco sales than will benefit New York's depleted coffers. The cigarette tax comes as a furtive attempt to raise revenue to reduce a projected $9 billion shortfall in Albany.
