ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Two mail carriers were robbed in Rochester in broad daylight, and police are currently searching for suspects. News10NBC’s Marsha Augustin visited the neighborhoods where the robberies occurred to talk to people who were impacted.
Shea Anderson, a resident in the area, expressed concern about the safety of mail carriers. “These mailmen aren’t safe. This is sad. It’s really sad,” Anderson said.
Anderson shared her experience of waiting for her check to arrive. “Usually around 6:30 he comes from this way. He’ll park on Bernard and do the mail,” she said. When the mail carrier didn’t show up, Anderson decided to search for him.
“What made me like even come out to look for the mailman is I’m like okay it’s 6:50. He usually be here around 6:30 p.m. the latest,” Anderson said. She then learned from Augustin that the mail carrier had been robbed around 3:30 p.m.
“This is insane. What is the purpose of robbing the mailman? Probably to get checks like yours. Wow! That’s crazy. We got bills. We got kids. This is insane,” Anderson said.
Officers used police K-9s to track the suspects but were unsuccessful in finding anyone.
Anderson also mentioned hearing about another robbery on the west side. “She had told me earlier the mailman got robbed on the west side. I’m like wow this is crazy. I said I hope it’s not mine. And come to find out. Oh my God,” she said.
About an hour after the first robbery, another mail carrier was robbed at Depew and Forbes Street.
Leon Burrows, a resident of Depew and Forbes Street for 40 years, was surprised to learn about the robbery. “My mailman’s truck was right in front of my house. I saw nothing that was suspicious. So I really don’t know. I’m surprised to come back home to find out something had happened here,” Burrows said.
“I hope my mailman is okay,” Burrows added.
We reached out to the Post Master late Thursday afternoon but have not received a response. The local letter carriers union president said this is a serious problem, noting that three carriers have been assaulted in the area in the past week, including the two incidents today. Officials urged residents to call 911 if they see anyone suspicious near a mail carrier.
