Iran Repels Major Cyberattack Following Deadly Port Explosion

By The Media Line Staff

Iran announced it had successfully repelled a large-scale cyberattack against its infrastructure on Sunday, a day after a deadly explosion at the Shahid Rajaee port in Bandar Abbas killed more than 40 people and injured over 1,200. Iranian authorities described the cyberattack as one of the most extensive and complex the country has faced in recent years.

Behzad Akbari, CEO of Iran’s Infrastructure Communications Company, said the breach was contained “by the grace of God and the efforts of security and technical teams,” according to the semiofficial Tasnim News Agency. Iran’s Communications Minister Issa Zarepour also confirmed the attempted cyberattack, emphasizing that preventive measures prevented serious damage. No group has claimed responsibility.

Iranian media linked the cyber offensive to heightened regional tensions and ongoing nuclear negotiations. It comes amid growing accusations by Iranian officials that Israel was behind Saturday’s explosion at Shahid Rajaee port. “Israel was involved in the Rajaee Port explosion. This was not an accident,” Iranian parliament member Mohammed Seraj said. He claimed explosives had been planted in containers, alleging clear evidence of Israeli involvement.

The Shahid Rajaee port, Iran’s largest commercial hub, has been targeted in past cyber incidents widely attributed to Israel, including a 2020 attack that disrupted shipping operations. Iranian infrastructure has remained vulnerable since the discovery of the Stuxnet virus in 2010, which was reportedly a US-Israeli effort to sabotage Iran’s nuclear program.

The latest events coincide with renewed diplomatic talks involving President Donald Trump’s administration, which has signaled interest in negotiating a tougher nuclear agreement with Tehran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, has warned against any deal that does not fully dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
