Cyberattack Disrupts Iranian Banking Amid Tensions With Israel, West: Report

By The Media Line Staff

A significant cyberattack has struck the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) and multiple other banks, disrupting the nation’s banking system, according to a report by Iran International. The outlet, which is aligned with the Iranian opposition, indicated that the magnitude of the attack suggests it could be one of the largest to ever hit Iran’s state infrastructure. This comes at a time of growing tensions in the Middle East and heightened international pressure on Iran.

The cyberattack occurred amid reports that Iranian hackers were allegedly trying to influence the upcoming US elections. According to a recent Microsoft study, these hackers are involved in creating fake news websites targeting both liberal and conservative audiences, along with efforts to infiltrate a presidential campaign.

On August 14, Iranians reported ATM failures, receiving error messages when attempting to withdraw money. Earlier that day, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, commented on external threats, saying, “The exaggeration of our enemies’ capabilities is intended to spread fear among our people by the US, Britain, and the Zionists.”

This incident coincides with heightened scrutiny of Iran’s regional actions, particularly following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. The UK, France, and Germany have issued a joint statement warning Iran that it “will bear responsibility” for any retaliatory actions against Israel, stressing the need to avoid escalating tensions and jeopardizing ongoing negotiations for a cease-fire and hostage release deal.
