(SRN NEWS) Seven families have filed a lawsuit challenging Arkansas’ requirement that public school classrooms display the 10 Commandments. The legislation was signed in April by Republican Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders. It mirrors a similar statute enacted in Louisiana and another in Texas. The lawsuit argues that the requirement to post the Commandments violates the families’ First Amendment rights by endorsing a religious viewpoint. The suit was filed by the ACLU, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State and the Freedom from Religion Foundation.
( ) Gay activists are pressuring the government of Guatemala to legalize same-sex marriage. Two Mexican women were married on the grounds of Mexico’s embassy in Guatemala this month, sparking anger in a nation that doesn’t recognize the practice. Mexican officials say the ceremony was intended to celebrate Gay Pride Month and was “a step toward inclusion, respect and equality for all.” Guatemalan officials decried the event, saying it violates the law. They vowed not to be pushed into legalizing gay marriage against the will of the people.
( ) The Satanic Temple Iowa has filed a complaint accusing state officials of discriminating against the group because of its members’ religion, having denied them access to the state Capitol building for a December holiday display and event. In 2023, the group’s holiday observances garnered national attention after a Mississippi man destroyed their Iowa Statehouse display depicting a lifesize image of Satan. It had been permitted in the rotunda along with a Christmas tree and other religious holiday decorations.
( ) A feminist legal organization is warning parents that Roblox (ROH-blox), a popular online gaming platform marketed to children as young as five years old, may be putting kids at risk of sexual exploitation. The group A Case For Women points out that Roblox has been accused of lackluster safety protocols when it comes to protecting users. Mounting lawsuits have accused Roblox of leaving an “unlocked door” that predators have exploited. The platform has over 78 million users but only employs about 3,000 moderators.
