Man from controversial traffic stop pleads guilty to illegal reentry

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The man from the controversial traffic stop has pleaded guilty to illegal reentry into the U.S.

Wilson Oswaldo Galvan-Lopez, 25, from Guatemala, was removed from the U.S. in May of 2023, according to the U.S. Assistant Attorney. At some point after that, they say he reentered the U.S. illegally.

This led to the traffic stop by Border Patrol on March 24 in Rochester that gained national attention, as Rochester Police officers were accused of violating Rochester’s sanctuary policy. Galvan-Lopez was found in a van at the time of the stop with other people, who officials say have “no immigration status.”

Galvan-Lopez was sentenced to time served and was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
