Jury selection starts for three former prison guards charged in Robert Brooks’ death

MARCY, N.Y. — Jury selection began on Monday in the trial of three former prison guards charged in the beating death of Robert Brooks at Marcy Correctional Facility.

They’re among the 10 prison staff members indicted in Brooks’ death, six of whom have pleaded guilty. Bodycam footage shows guards beating Brooks, an inmate and Greece native, in a medical exam room in December. He died in the hospital the next day.

Former guards David Kingsley, Nicholas Kieffer, and Matthew Galliher all rejected a plea offer in their second-degree murder charge, choosing to go to trial instead. The trial is expected to last between two and three weeks, according to our Utica-area NBC affiliate.

In September, four former guards pleaded guilty to manslaughter during their Oneida County Court appearance. All four of the men are scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 21. Since Brooks’ death, his family has been pushing for charges in the prison system.
