ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) inaugurated its new president Friday, marking a historic moment.
Dr. Caroline Solomon is NTID’s first woman president. Her background is in marine biology and environmental science. As a deaf scholar, she will oversee the world’s largest technological college for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
“It’s a really historical moment. We’ve never had a female president of NTID and I’m humbled that that person is me,” said Solomon. “As a scientist, I’ve always wanted to be here at RIT NTID. I walk through NTID, I walk through RIT spaces, I see the labs, I see the equipment, and I’m truly at home.”
Dr. Solomon has been honored for expanding research and career opportunities for deaf and hard-of-hearing students and developing a database of science terms in American Sign Language.
