UTICA, N.Y. — A former prison guard pleaded guilty to gang assault in connection with the death of Mid-State Correctional inmate Messiah Nantwi, News10NBC’s affiliate WSTM in Syracuse reports.
Prosecutors charged ten guards involved in beating Nantwi to death in March at Mid-State Correctional Facility, including Francis Chandler.
This facility is located across the street from the prison where Robert Brooks was beaten and killed.
Chandler will be sentenced to four years in prison in January. Three other guards pleaded guilty to falsifying records. Two of them also pleaded guilty to hindering prosecution.
Chandler’s plea comes as jury deliberations have begun in the trial of three former prison guards charged with murder in connection to Brooks’ death.
