First Alert Weather: Air quality alert continues until midnight

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Wildfire smoke continues to spread into Western New York making for a hazy sky but also reaching ground level for this Sunday.  During this late Sunday afternoon, the air quality index, which measures pollutants in the air, measured over 140 which places the Rochester area in the unhealthy category.  The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has issued an air quality alert until midnight Sunday.  In addition, they recommend that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young and those with pre-existing respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease.  It is anticipated that AQI will decrease Monday as conditions slowly improve.

Weatherwise, we have an extended period of dry weather with the first chance for any rain not until the end of next weekend. In addition, the heat will slowly build through the week.  We expect high temperatures in the middle to upper 80s through Thursday.  Then we have the opportunity for 90-degree weather for Friday through Monday.
