EU convenes trade ministers after Trump tariffs, say diplomats

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – European Union trade ministers will hold an unscheduled video conference on Wednesday to discuss the bloc’s response to impending U.S. steel and aluminium tariffs, EU diplomats said on Tuesday.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed proclamations late on Monday to raise tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports to 25% without exceptions or exemptions. A White House official confirmed that the measures would take effect on March 4.

The European Commission, which oversees trade policy for the European Union, will seek to gauge views of the 27 EU members at the video conference due to take place at 4 p.m. (1500 GMT).
