Area of Culver Road still shut down Wednesday after water main break; Water back on for neighbors

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The area around Culver Road and Meredith Street is still shut down on Wednesday morning after a massive water main break on Tuesday morning. It left 30 homes without water and flooded several basements.

News10NBC’s Kristi Blake went back to the scene on Wednesday after being there all morning on Tuesday as the water gushed. The road is blocked off at the light on Empire, but it is expected to open at some point on Wednesday.

The city said about 30 people were impacted when the 8-inch main broke. Crews have repaired the main and water is back on for those customers, but several spent the day in their basements funneling out the water.

“My husband and I for like, 30 to 45 minutes– he had the worst of it, he ended up having to like take a break and make sure he didn’t get hypothermia because we don’t have waders. So we were just down there kind of like an assembly line, shuffling things upstairs to higher ground,” said Izzy Updike, whose basement flooded after the water main break.

By around 7 p.m., RG&E turned the gas on for all but one customer who asked to keep theirs off. At this time on Tuesday, there was about a foot of water flooding Meredith Street.

News10NBC punched some numbers. An 8-inch break leaking for about five hours can produce 2 million gallons of water or three Olympic size swimming pools.

The city urged anyone impacted to make sure to flush their pipes. You can do that by running the water for five minutes straight.
